Welcome back to the AI For Humans Newsletter!

This week’s big story is the deal that Lionsgate has struck with RunwayML to create a proprietary AI video model that’s trained on Lionsgate content. It’s the first such publicly announced deal, but we know that OpenAI has been shopping their Sora product to studios, and this is all a clear sign of things to come. So…

What exactly are the implications here?

First and foremost, this comes at a tumultuous time for Hollywood at large. The industry is still reeling from the writers and actors strikes and new production is WAY down across the board. In addition, this particular quote from Runway’s own release might scare more than a few people:

Runway is a visionary, best-in-class partner who will help us utilize AI to develop cutting edge, capital efficient content creation opportunities…

Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns

While “capital efficient content creation” sounds like a phrase that was formed at a corporate jargon trust-fall retreat, there are some things you can do to get ahead of this shift — and be clear, this is a shift and it’s only going to speed up from here. We expect a number of these deals to be announced over the next six to twelve months.

How To Get Ahead Of This Trend

First and foremost, listen & watch AI For Humans each week. Duh.

More importantly, set aside some time to use the tools we talk about, specifically the AI video models so you have a sense of what they’re capable of and what they can’t do yet. Then put your creative brain to work and use them as you would consider using non-AI production tools and start to think about how you might be able to integrate them into your workflows.

This doesn’t just go for media types either. If you’re in marketing, there are ways you can use these sorts of tools to upgrade your product presentations. If you’re in sales, use them for your pitch decks. Heck, just this week a guy in System Solutions used AI media tools to make an “music video resume” which might be the first time that phrase has ever been uttered. Recruiters went bonkers & he got ten job offers.

There’s never been a bigger opportunity to get ahead in this space than now.

3 Things To Know

Suno’s New Cover Song Feature
Transform anything into a entirely new song. Think of it like style transfer on an image or video, but for music. Yesterday, Kevin used it to turn a voice memo into a broadway musical about Hot Dog City in one of our most cursed creations.

Kling AI 1.5 Motion Brush
Kling is pushing the boundaries of control with a really impressive new approach to motion brushes. While many of today’s examples may not fool the trained eye, you can see how this is quickly becoming an incredible tool for independent creators and small teams alike.

A Busy Fall for OpenAI
More people may be getting access to OpenAI’s advanced voice model as early as today. We’ve been VERY excited to get our hands on this since the original demo. Also, potential leaks around their new o1 model (not the preview) indicate it could be a big step up from preview, allegedly scoring a 94.8 on the MATH dataset. To put this into perspective, if true, in 2021 a 3-time international math olympiad gold medalist scored a 90. Only 48 mathletes have taken gold at least 3 times.

Runway’s New Video-To-Video Model
Here’s how easy it is to restyle your videos with this new model:

1. Upload a video - remember this could be real footage or AI video
2. Write a text prompt or use one of Runway’s templated prompts
3. Spin the wheel until you run out of credits get something you like!
