Today on AI For Humans:
OpenAI’s Spud Finally Incoming?
Claude Design Takes on Figma
Plus, Easy Motion GFX With AI Coding!
Welcome to the AI For Humans newsletter!
2026 has been the year of Anthropic so far and their latest release Opus 4.7 and the new Claude Design tool (see below) show they’re not slowing down.
On the other hand, 2026 has been a year of chaos and disruption for OpenAI.
However, if the purported leaks of their imminent new Spud model are to be believed, OpenAI might finally get their big comeback moment.
Exactly what are we expecting this week? And when? And just how much is on the line for OpenAI with this release? Let’s get into it!

Is OpenAI’s Spud Currently in ChatGPT Pro?
As mentioned here a few weeks back, we’ve already been seeing some leaks of OpenAI’s new image model.
And the official Codex release last week points to a more unified ‘SuperApp’ where all of their tools exist within the same space.
But this weekend, people on X started to share a bunch more examples of very high end coding and visual work being created in ChatGPT Pro 5.4 and it looks like they’ve silently leaked the new model.
We always take these sorts of posts with a grain of salt (wherefore art thou DeekSeek v4?) but based on the sheer amount of people sharing examples this time, it feels a bit more likely to be real.
As a Pro subscriber myself (thank you Patreons!) I gave it a shot with a weird old SVG prompt I’d used prior to test Gemini 3.1 Pro… and it did pretty well!
It’s not perfect but there’s a LOT going on here and it feels like something different.
This new model has been in the works for sometime and while there’s no actual date locked down, the prediction markets very clearly are pointing to a release this week with Thursday April 23rd looking like where it’s going to land.
And yes, we’ve covered rumors of its release before but OpenAI is likely taking their time to make sure it’s good. After all, they have a LOT riding on this one.

OpenAI’s Big Turning Point
It’s not hard to see just how much OpenAI has on the line in this particular moment.
The giant early lead that ChatGPT gave them is slowly being eaten away by Anthropic on the coding and enterprise side and Google on the consumer side.
There’s been a ton of snarky tweets as of late that OpenAI is like the Yahoo! of the AI age (early lead, got demolished by Google) but I’m really curious to see what they’ve got up their sleeves.
If there ever was a time to deliver a knock-out blow, this would be it.
Of course, we’ll be covering it all on this show this week so tune in!

3 Things To Know About AI Today
Claude Design: Is This The Death of Figma?
There’s an argument amongst the financial bros that the major AI labs will just start slowly cleaving off all software companies until there are none left.
Well, if Claude Design is any implication, they might be right.
Claude Design is a very cool tool that lets you create designs with Claude Code & manipulate things like color and text size in a clean user interface.
It also lets you collaborate with multiple people, much like Figma.
I chortled at Figma founder and CEO Dylan Field’s response to the announcement but this does point to another slice of the software pie that AI might just own outright.
And, yes, design is about more than the tools but companies that create tools like Figma or Photoshop are not in it for the art.
Big OpenAI Departures: Former CPO & Head of Sora Leave
OpenAI might be gearing up for it’s biggest launch ever (see above) but… it also happens to be losing a ton of people as of late.
A few weeks ago, we got a weird reshuffling memo but this weekend news broke of two very large departures: Kevin Weil, former Chief Product Officer and current Head of Science, and Bill Peebles, the main brain behind Sora.
Both of these aren’t that surprising: Weil’s move over to Head of Science a while back felt a little like taking him off the A team and Peebles’ Sora was just killed a few weeks ago.
Peebles’ long exit post is worth your time and I personally have always appreciated how he’s approached not only AI video but sharing his learnings.
But… for a company approaching what is likely a very large IPO to be shedding a ton of people? It does seem weird.
Humanoid Robot Smashes Half-Marathon Record, Itself
But, even better, the drama of the clip below where it nearly died before crossing the finish line is the stuff of Olympic legends.
Some BIG caveats here:
First and foremost, this robot was remotely operated and not autonomous meaning that it’s basically just a remote control car with legs.
Second, yes, machines can go faster that humans! Cars are a thing!
But it is another example of how much progress China is making on humanoids and we’ll be seeing a lot more of these in our lives very soon.
We 💛 This: HyperFrames AI Coding Harness Creates Programmable Motion VFX
I’ve worked in some form of video production for nearly all of my professional life (I was an ESL teacher in Seoul for a brief sojourn) but mostly on the creative side.
When it came to the technical aspects of my work, be it cameras or editing or <gasp> After Effects, I let the experts do their thing and often marveled at what came out.
But now, as a content creator, I end up spending a lot of time handling these aspects, specifically editing. And while I’ve gotten better, I’m still fumbling my way through the more advanced levels.
But thanks to AI programming tools like Claude Code and the new HyperFrames harness from HeyGen… I can finally do the sorts of dead simple animations that editors can probably do in their sleep!
Again, as we often say, it’s not that AI tools will make you an instant expert but this is one of those very specific things I’ve needed for a while and now I don’t have to learn AfterEffects to do it.
That is a massive level up for me personally and it might be for you too!
