Google's Been Cooking on AI šŸ§‘ā€šŸ³šŸ²

Their new AI video model VEO 2 looks even better than Sora

Today on AI For Humans The Newsletter!
OpenAIā€™s ā€˜12 Days Of Shipmasā€™ marches on
Your ChatGPT just got some juicy upgrades
And Google drops a surprisingly good set of creative tools
Plus, our canā€™t-miss AI feature of the week!

Welcome back to the AI For Humans Newsletter!

As we continue to monitor OpenAIā€™s ā€˜12 Days of Shipmasā€™ this week (video is live in Advanced Voice mode, ChatGPT Search live for free users & Projects in ChatGPT), itā€™s actually Google that has us the most excited becauseā€¦

This Dog Does Not Exist So Donā€™t Be Worried About Him

We knew that Google had been cooking in the lab but we didnā€™t know theyā€™d cooked this hard. The videos weā€™ve seen both from Google themselves and from early users have astonished us.

The prompt coherence is VERY good as is the additional camera controls, but maybe even more importantly it handles realistic physics (like slicing a tomato) much better than other video models and significantly better than OpenAIā€™s Soraā€¦ and the benchmarks prove it.

Interestingly, Kling looks like its closest competition.

And, eventually, Veo 2 will be able to generate AI video in 4K video resolution. šŸ¤Æ

Why is Veo 2 so good? Wellllllll, a lot of people think (including us) that it might be trained on a whole lot of YouTube. Because if youā€™re the worldā€™s largest internet video repository, youā€™d probably be putting that video to good use in training your new AI video model. Not that everyone is happy about that. This video from the amazing Hank Green gets into what makes that so complicated.

Veo 2 follows the absolute barrage of announcements last week from Google including a new image model Imagen 3 (some of which we covered in last weekā€™s episode), all of which plants a significant flag in the AI race. We still donā€™t love Geminiā€™s chat functions vs ChatGPT or Claude butā€¦ weā€™re warming to what Google has on offer.

Veo 2 isnā€™t available to the public right now but you can sign up for the waitlist and hope that Demis & the rest of the GoogleDeepMind team punches your ticket into AI video nirvana.

See you on Thursday!

3 Things To Know

ChatGPT Search For All + Projects
Taking aim at Google, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Search is now free for all. Pair this with the new Siri integration and ChatGPT wants to be the talk of the holiday table. On Friday we also got Projects in ChatGPT. Itā€™s a new way to organize the context and instructions around a specific job to be done, but can also simply serve as a folder structure for your conversations šŸ™Œ

Ilya Offers A Peek Into Whatā€™s Next for AI
The man many argue has been the biggest driving force behind the technical unlocks of generative AI, Ilya Sutskever, gave a 25 minute talk this week discussing what he believes is the end of the age of pre-training. Since his departure from OpenAI he has his own startup cooking, but the talk is a fascinating peek into whatā€™s to come.

Mothers Everywhere Are Opted Into Apple Intelligence Over The Holiday
OpenAI announced ChatGPT support in Siri but it still requires opting into Apple Intelligence, and having an iPhone 15 pro or 16. The holiday season presents the ideal opportunity to outsource some IT consulting in the new year by opting mom in. While the ChatGPT implementation is pretty slick, for power users Siriā€™s starting to feel like the third-wheel weā€™d be happy to bypass entirely.

We šŸ’› This - Sora Remix

Sora has probably been dethroned as the best video generation model available, but one could argue theyā€™ve introduced among the most useful feature sets.

Remix, re-cut, storyboard, blend, and style presets each offer interesting ways to control your outputs. But the one that has the internet aflutter has been Remix, giving you the power to improve or remaster generations from other models.
